The acquisition follows another recent French omnichannel agreement that saw Tipico and Betclic owner Banijay Entertainment’s gaming arm acquire JOA’s network of 33 regional casinos across France. 

Banijay did not disclose any financial details, except that the acquisition would be supported by funds managed by Blackstone and Kings Park Capital.

Merkur represents the gaming and leisure division of the Gauselmann Group, a historic German family-owned enterprise specialising in gaming machines, software and casino operations across Europe.

The absence of a feature buy is itself telling. Where much of Push Gaming’s higher-profile work leans on bonus-buy mechanics and layered features, a stripped-back jackpot title signals that the studio is content to let its classic strand stay simple.

The broader takeaway is about range. Maintaining a dedicated sub-brand for retro-styled content lets Push Gaming serve operators looking for a spread of formats, from marquee high-volatility slots to low-key jackpot games that appeal to a different segment of players.

The DOCV reinforced its calls for a unified federal licensing regime for online casino games and stronger enforcement mechanisms against illegal operators. 

An ongoing review of the Interstate Treaty on Gambling, which is meant to conclude by the end of this year, should introduce a nationwide licensing model for online casino games, the group added.

As part of the review, German regulators decided in July to lift the €1 staking limit on online slots, another signal that regulators are actively reassessing the framework ahead of the treaty’s formal review.
